King |
Royal unit. Moves one square orthogonally
or diagonally on the middle board only, or directly up or down one square.

Warrior |
As FIDE pawns, but no
initial double move. Stays on the middle board.
Promotes to Hero.

Hero |
On the middle board, moves one or jumps two squares
diagonally. On any board, moves one square diagonally in all three
directions.

Sylph |
On the top board, moves/captures as a Berolina pawn, no initial
double move. It may capture by moving straight down to the middle
board. It may return to the upper board without capturing by moving
straight up, or returning to any empty square where a friendly
sylph began play.

Griffin |
On the top board, a 3,2 leaper.
Between top and middle board, may move/capture one square diagonally
(all three directions).

Dragon |
Moves and captures as FIDE bishop or king.
May capture a unit on the square below, or orthogonally adjacent to it,
without moving. Confined to upper level.

Oliphant |
As a FIDE rook.
Confined to the middle board.

Unicorn |
As a FIDE knight.
Confined to the middle board.

Thief |
As a FIDE bishop.
Confined to the middle board.

Cleric |
On any board, moves and captures
as a FIDE king. Also moves and captures one square up or down.

Mage |
On the middle board, moves and captures
as a FIDE bishop. On the upper or lower boards, moves and
captures one square orthogonally. May move and capture one or two
squares straight up or down; if moving between upper and lower boards,
may not pass through an occupied square.

Paladin |
On the middle board, moves and captures
as a knight or king. On the upper or lower boards, moves and
captures as a king. May move and capture between boards as
a knight.

 |
Dwarf |
As a pawn, plus one square to either
side non-capturing. No initial double move.
Does not promote.

Basilisk |
Forward straight or diagonally one square
to capture, backward straight one square without capturing.
Immobilizes any hostile unit above it.

Elemental |
On the lower board,
one square in any orthogonal direction to move
or capture. One square diagonally without capturing.
If the square directly orthogonal is unoccupied, it may
move or capture to the square just beyond or the square just
above. On the middle board, only if the square below is unoccupied,
it may move or capture to any square orthogonally adjacent to the
square below.
