Fatty ingrowth of the Heart (Histo)

The white bubbles are fat cells in the muscular wall of the heart. The heart muscle cells themselves are pink with blue staining nuclei.

It is a mistake to think of fat cells actually "growing into" the heart muscle. Instead, cells of the heart's own blood vessels simply decide to store fat.

The process has nothing to do with atherosclerosis, the cause of most heart disease.
